The Artist
April 9, 2011
Six-year-old Nour (pronounced “Noor”-it’s Arabic, meaning “light”) is a budding artist who says her favorite art medium is painting. She also enjoys playing on the iPhone, and her favorite app is Cookie Maker. She is in 1st grade. Her favorite story is Cinderella, but her current favorite subject is Pirates. Her daddy is a photographer and her mom is a writer, knitter and stay at home mom. She also has a little brother who likes to follow her around and do everything she is doing.
This blog will capture her artistic spirit through various mediums, including marker, crayon, pencil, chalk, watercolor and photography.

We’re supposed to sing about pirate-y things
September 14, 2011
I’ve been slacking off on sharing Nour’s art lately. She’s still being creative, but sometimes it’s a little larger than life, and can’t be shared as easily in blog form, but in other cases, I just haven’t gotten around to sharing.
But I have a few things to share from the last two weeks. We’ve been talking about pirates a lot lately, both she and her brother are obsessed, and are convinced they’re going to be pirates for Halloween-I’m not committing to anything, they might have a new obsession by then. But for now, here are a few piratey things Nour’s drawn lately, including a self-portrait of her as the captain of her own pirate ship.

The treasure map
A writing assignment and her rendition of a pirate in his ship. The pirate’s sword is in his belt, the hilt is yellow. The map is in his hook, but isn’t quite as obvious to see.
Teacher Appreciation
May 4, 2011
This past weekend, Nour drew some pictures for her kindergarten teachers, Miss Calhoun and Mrs. McCoy. The pictures were so sweet, but she didn’t give them to the teachers yet, so I wanted to make sure I scanned them in for her and shared them with you all. Since it was just Teacher Appreciation day, I thought they were a perfect gift from a kindergartner. The picture for Mrs. McCoy is of our family, the one for Miss Calhoun is of Nour and her teacher, who happens to have short hair. Her drawings of people are really improving.

Watercolors (2)

It’s been more than a week since I’ve posted any new artwork, but I have two nice watercolors to share today. Nour loves to fill a page with color, and these both are examples of that style.

Animals
April 17, 2011
We got a pack of art paper several months ago, and it had a couple of drawings of animals on the front, and Nour decided to make her own version of the animals. I don’t have the original anymore to compare, but hers are a pretty good match, and she even did a little bit of creating on her own. Here are a lion, a cub and a giraffe.

Blue’s Clues
April 14, 2011
Nour’s and her brother’s favorite show is Blue’s Clues. They watch it on Netflix, and they both love it. In fact, she loves it so much that I regularly find drawings of Steve, Blue and the gang all over the house. Here are some of them.

The Dinosaur Story
April 12, 2011
One night at the kitchen table, Nour started drawing something very interesting. When I asked her about it, she said “It’s about the dinosaur getting tickled!” and giggled a little. Well, I was amused, so I kept checking back with her to see what would happen. Now, we present to you, the story called

“The Dinosaur Got Tickled” (by Nour) [Cover]
The dinosaur was alone.
The bird came to the dinosaur.
The girl had a feather.
The girl dropped the feather.
The dinosaur got trapped.
The End
So, she needs to work on her storytelling skills a little. But she really enjoyed drawing this story, so maybe one day she will illustrate more books!
This book was drawn on drawing paper with markers.
Treasure Island
April 11, 2011
Nour received a copy of the DVD Dora the Explorer Treasure Island for Christmas, and soon afterward became obsessed with drawing treasure islands. This happens to be one of many, but it’s also the most distinctive, as the other ones aren’t quite as clear on what the drawing actually is, unless, of course, you ask Nour.
This was drawn with a combination of ink pen and crayons. I had to edit out some of her brother’s scratches at the top, as I occasionally will have to do, because he tends to draw on her drawings if she doesn’t put them away quickly.

We still hadn’t quite figured out the save option, so it still has part of the app’s tools in the corner.
